Women's Trench Coat - A One Hundred Year Old Style Still Going Strong

Women's Trench Coat

There probably isn't a more well loved coat than a women's trench coat. Trench coats are versatile and always fashionable. Whether it's Spring or Fall a trench coat will keep you covered in style. You'll find trench coats in all types of fabric, generally leather, polyester, gabardine and cotton.

So what makes a trench coat unmistakably a trench coat? Well, it's obviously the fabric, generally rain repellent. Trench coats also generally have linings that can be removed if need be. Trench coats are double breasted with ten pockets and are belted. They have an unmistakable military look to them with straps at the shoulders and the sleeves. That's because the trench coat as we know it today started it's life in the military during World War I.

The trench coat was created by Thomas Burberry in 1901. Yes, this is the same Burberry you're thinking of. There is probably no better known check pattern than the Burberry black, white and red check pattern which is called the novacheck. This check pattern was used by Burberry in 1924 as a lining for their trench coats.

Another reason for the popularity of the trench coat is it's association in popular culture. A lot of people will remember seeing Sex in the City star Sarah Jessica Parker playing her role of Carrie Bradshaw with her trench coat loving wrapped around her, always fashionable. How about the role the trench coat played for the character Dick Tracy, or in the movies worn by Peter Seller's character Inspector Clouseau.

The first women's trench coats we looked at were the Burberry trench coats. We particularly liked the Burberry poplin trench coat in a tan poplin fabric. We liked it's just above the knee length. Very becoming with pants. We also liked the Burberry women's short trench coat in a slightly off white color called trench. What Burberry collection would be complete without a check pattern? Burberry also offers a women's trench coat in a black, white and tan check.

It seems that every designer has some type of a women's trench coat. Ann Taylor has one. Spiegel has many different women's trench coats to choose from. From a fabulous linen trench coat from their Signature Luxe Linen Collection to a smart and sporty red leather trench trimmed in houndstooth, to a classic belted trench in melton wool.

Another great thing about a women's trench coat is that it flatters every figure. Shoulders that are accentuated and a waist that is belted is always a great way to give yourself enviable curves.

We've seen a BCBG Max Azria Alexandra trench coat that has an empire waist and three quarter length sleeves. We didn't think it was necessarily stylish. The empire waist won't flatter every woman as will a women's trench coat belted at the waist.

Some of the other designers who have put their own stamp on women's trench coats are Kenneth Cole, Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, DKNY, Sutton Studio, London Fog, Jones New York and Tommy Hilfiger.
